Obituary

Daniel Francis Sullivan, Jr., 83, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach, and teacher, passed away peacefully at home on December 4, 2018. He died as he lived, with his loyal family at his side.
Danny and his devoted wife of 60 years, Joanne (Osowiecki) Sullivan, have both been lifelong residents of Suffield, CT.

Danny was born in Hartford, CT on November 9, 1935, son of Marian (O’Malley) and Daniel Francis Sullivan. Danny was predeceased by his parents and his sister Shirley (Sullivan) Wentworth.

In addition to his cherished wife, Joanne, Danny is survived by his five dedicated sons: Brian and his wife Linda, Mark, Dan, David and his wife Michelle, and Corey and his wife Betsy.

Danny’s memory also lives on in his twelve loving grandchildren: Brian Patrick and his wife Marisa; Josh, Kallie, Joe, Dan, Tara, Jamie, Sean, Eric, Katie, Robert, and McKenzie.

Danny was adored by his two great-grandsons, Neil and Finian.

Danny graduated in 1953 from Suffield High School, where he earned 16 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, baseball, and track and field, along with serving as Class President all four years. Danny then attended Wilbraham Academy in 1954, earning 3 varsity letters and the Sportsmanship Award, and playing his way into Springfield College.

At Springfield College, Danny played varsity soccer, basketball, and baseball, while earning his B.S. and Master’s in Education. He played right halfback for the 1957 National Championship soccer team, and was selected for First Team All-New England and First Team All-American honors.

Danny leaves behind a dual legacy of family and service to his community, and will be remembered as a dear friend who did not know a stranger. Known affectionately to most as “Coach,” he coached boys’ soccer, basketball, and baseball and taught Physical Education and Health at Windsor Locks High School from 1960-2000. He also coached Suffield Little League for 25 years and Suffield High School girls’ basketball. He instilled in two full generations of players and students the values of good sportsmanship, effort, teamwork, respect, pride, and loyalty.

Danny also served in the military as a medic in the 309th Medical Corps of the U.S. Army National Guard.
Good game, Coach. We love you, and take care.

I think of all the cold winters when I was a kid at 50 Bancroft St. in Springfield, MA. knowing that come summer my Brother and I would be back at Restland Farms and Congamond Lakes with Danny Sullivan. I took Daniel for my Confirmation name in honor of my Friend. My deepest condolences to Joanne and all of the Sullivans. Rest in Peace Danny.

Joanne and family - my deepest condolences on your loss. Not only was Sully a great coach, but he was also a great man. He touched the lives of so many people. Every athlete I know who played for him told me they learned so much from him about life.I always wished I had played for him, but I did get to play with him in slo-pitch softball on Skeet's team. Danny was a hoot. He will truly be missed. Again, my deepest sympathies. Thought and prayers for all of you.

Coach Sullivan was a throwback to another era when three letters in three different sports was an athletic ideal and when one coach would coach major sports in three different seasons. He coached three sports in three different seasons longer and better than any coach in the history of Connecticut high school sports. The man won a total of 1,236 games in those three sports, including 7 state championships and countless conference titles. This achievement is amazing and will probably never be equaled. Who coaches three major sports anymore in the age of specialization? Beyond that, the outpouring of sympathy from former athletes and students is overwhelming and all seems to be a variation on one theme: “The man changed my life.” He was a practitioner of tough love in its best sense—a demanding but fair taskmaster who commanded the respect of his athletes. Unfortunately, this brand of coaching is severely frowned up lately, making it unlikely that we will ever see his kind again. That is too bad. Beyond the profound effect that Sully often had on the lives of his athletes, he was also our beloved inventor of hand soccer in gym class! My condolences to his family and friends. His is a legacy of amazing achievement.
