Norma (Swanson) Neilson, 85, of Suffield, Beloved wife of Edward H. Neilson, died Tuesday February 5, 2008 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born the daughter of the late Thomas and Susan (Baco) Swanson and lived in Suffield the last 60 years. Mrs. Neilson was employed at the Van Norman Company in Springfield as Executive Secretary for 6 years and The Suffield School System as School Secretary for 38 years before retiring in 2001. She was honored with “Person of the Year at Bridge St. School†for all her dedication, contributions, and development of the students. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ Congregational and Women’s Fellowship and a member of the Historic First Baptist Church of Suffield. Norma was a graduate of Agawam High School class of 1940. She was a member of the National Honor Society, was an Agawam High School Athlete and remained active in the 1940 Class Reunion Committee. The family would like to express their deepest thanks to Kathy Ostroski and Bulha Sylvia for their dedication and care to Norma. Besides her husband Edward, she is survived by a son Glenn and his wife Joanne Neilson of Suffield, a daughter Nancy Neilson of Agawam MA, and her children Nelson & Michael LaMonica. A daughter in law Debra Neilson and her children, Jamie, Carly, and Kristi Neilson. Her brother Roland Swanson of Greensborough N.C., and Sister Adele S. Howley of Agawam MA. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, James Swanson, Norman Swanson, Ronald Howley, Susan Brisson, Robert Swanson, and Gary Swanson. She also leaves a sister in law Barbara Swanson and a brother in law Wally Gullifer. Norma was pre deceased by a son Edward “ Teddy†Neilson, her brother Ernest Swanson and sister Agnes Howard.
A Graveside service at Zion Hill Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. A Memorial funeral service will be held on Sat. Feb. 16, at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 81 High St. Suffield at 10 AM. The Heritage Funeral Home West Suffield has care of the arrangements.
