Obituary for Walter H. Winkler

Walter Herbert Winkler, 87, died peacefully at his home in West Suffield, CT on Thursday, April 16, 2015.
He was born on January 30, 1928 in Reichenberg, Sudetenland (Germany) the son of Franz Josef Winkler and Hildegard Schubert Winkler.
Walter became a Master Cabinetmaker in Germany and immigrated first in 1953 to Saskatchewan, Canada, where he met his wife, and then to the United States in 1956.
He worked for Deming Craftsman Inc. in Granby, Connecticut and then for 22 years at The Hitchcock Chair Company in Riverton, Connecticut until his retirement in 1993. At Hitchcock, Walter crafted the prototype and sample furniture in the wood shop overlooking the Farmington River. In 1977 he was featured on the cover of “The Furniture Maker’s Handbook.”
Walter loved the outdoors including walking, mountain hiking, ocean shores, kayaking and gardening. He enjoyed music and singing, was an avid reader, writer and artist, and savored conversations on many topics with family, friends, and even strangers.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margot Link Winkler of West Suffield, CT; his son Mark (and Lois) Winkler of Pleasantville, NY; his daughter Claudia Winkler of Denver, CO; his granddaughter Dr. Emily Winkler of Oxford, UK; and many relatives in Germany.
Walter was a member of the West Suffield Congregational Church in Connecticut. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the church on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 2:00 pm followed by a reception.
