Obituary for Lawrence E. Green

Lawrence E. Green
Lawrence Green of Suffield, Connecticut died Wednesday October 22, 2014. He was born in Revere, Massachusetts on August 25, 1930. He bravely fought for his country in the Korean War as a combat paratrooper in the 187th Airborne Regiment. He then went on to graduate from Boston University. He was a science teacher for 34 years in the Suffield, Connecticut and the Uniondale, New York school systems. A lifelong hockey enthusiast, he played for Revere High School, Boston University and for a semi-pro hockey team into his forties. However, his greatest achievements in hockey came when he created the Suffield High School hockey team and brought them to a state championship in 1979. As a dedicated coach, he taught his players how to win through his example of hard work, sportsmanship and team play. In addition to teaching and coaching, he was also an accomplished pilot, earning his pilots license and owning and restoring an antique aircraft. "Lightning Larry" often gave plane rides to his students and made many trips to Oshkosh. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances (DelVecchio) Green and his four children, Stephanie Giancola of Hampsted, NH, Cindy Morrissey of Tolland CT, Bruce Green of Suffield and Theresa Green of Plesanton, CA, all of whom graduated from both Suffield High School and the University of Connecticut. In addition he was a very proud grandfather to Dan Morrissey of Tucson, AZ, Christopher Morrissey of Manchester, CT, Rob Giancola of Newton, MA and Tom Giancola of Hampsted NH. Many of his students and friends will also remember him for the fox terriers that kept him company everywhere he went.
The funeral services and interment will be private. The Heritage Funeral Home, West Suffield has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial Donations may be made to St. Jude Tribute Program, PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 OR The American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
