Jean Mary   Furman Putala (Krupa)
Jean Mary (Krupa) Furman Putala, 93, passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on November 1, 2013. She was born in Chicopee, Mass, Nov. 2, 1919. Daughter of the late Anthony and Katherine (Stapor) Krupa and survived by her devoted husband, Henry Putala and her brother, Al Krupa. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph T. Furman, her two sisters, Marion Borys and Helen Steward, and her brother, Chester Krupa and also Henry’s daughter, Carol Pericozzi. She graduated from Chicopee High School and attended a secretarial school in Springfield, Mass. Bilingual in Polish and English, she was known for her excellent English grammar and penmanship. Jean was a loyal Red Sox fan. She is survived by her children, Patricia E. Pooler of South Hadley, MA, Andrea F. Kanfer (Paul) of Waterford, CT, Cynthia L. Furman of Columbia, CT, Jan F. Lemire (Michael) of Suffield, CT, and Marcia J. Furman of Torrington, CT, as well as Henry’s daughter, Sheila Litke of Warren, CT his son, Henry of Jacksonville, FL.She has ten grandchildren, CWO5 Garth Hahn (Shelley) of Alexandria, VA, Petrina E. Hahn of Chicopee, MA, Paige E. Rasid (Paul) of Somers, CT, Marcella L. Gruver (Brian) of Huntingtown, MD, Megan R. Lemire, Esq., of Portland, OR, Jay M. Lemire of Suffield, CT, Gregory and Timothy Jones of Torrington, CT, Zachary C. Kanfer of Brooklyn, NY, and Bethany K. Mitchell (Elijah) of New London, CT. She is also survived by Henry’s three grandchildren, Alicia, John, and Justin. She has six great grandchildren, David Walker, IV of Kingston, WA, Gabriel Hahn of South Hadley, MA, Alexander and Walter Jovan of Chicopee, MA, Johan Rasid of Somers, CT, and Nicholyn Jean Gruver of Huntingtown, MD. Henry has one great grandchild, Haley. She is also survived by a great great grandchild, David Walker V of Kingston, WA and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.The family is grateful for the extraordinary loving care given by Teresa Klim. Jean married Joseph T. Furman of Fall River, MA, in 1942 and lived in Hartford while he served in the US Navy. They moved to Suffield in 1947. She loved to sew clothes, can vegetables and fruits, knit, and crochet. She was treasurer of the East Street PTO and a member of the Spaulding Elementary PTO. She was also an assistant Girl Scout Troop leader. She was employed at Krupa Oil Company and Hood Ice Cream and Dairy from which she retired in 1981. She served as Secretary to the St. Joseph’s Rosary Guild, Secretary for 25 years to the Polish Women’s Alliance, and was a member of the Polish Women’s Catholic Union. She was a communicant of Saint Joseph’s Church.
After Joe’s death, she later married Henry Putala. Henry and Jean loved to dance, play cards and dominoes with their group of friends. They traveled extensively throughout the US and went on five trips to Europe, including four trips to Poland to visit relatives.
Friends and family may gather at Heritage Funeral Home 1240 Mountain Road, West Suffield, CT. Calling hours are 4-7 pm on Nov. 5th Tuesday Nov. 5th . The funeral will begin at Heritage Funeral home at 10 am with a mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s church at 11 on Wednesday. Nov 6th Her internment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery on Hill Street, Suffield.
