Obituary for John F. "Jack" O'Brien

John F. ‘Jack’ O’Brien, Jr., 64, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2012 in the presence of his family at Wingate of West Springfield. He was born on February 24, 1947, son of the late John F. O’Brien, Sr. and Mildred J. (Cote) O’Brien. “Jack” as he was affectionately known by friends and family, was a graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School, class of 1965, where he played right guard on the Gaels football team. After attending Northampton Commercial College, Jack began his career at Spaulding Industries and as a sports writer for the Holyoke Telegram. He retired from Dinn Bros. Trophy Inc. as the Show Room Manager after 25 years. He was an avid sports fan, loved golfing, fishing, and spending time boating on the river. A long time member of the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Jack was honored with the Gallivan Award in 1999 for his outstanding contributions and hard work. He had a passion for life which could be felt by all who met him. Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of 11 years, Jennie (Edick) O’Brien of South Hadley, MA, his daughter, Kelly O’Brien of Granby, MA, his sister M. Jane (O’Brien) Farrell and her husband Herb Farrell of Nashua, NH, his niece Elizabeth Farrell of Nashua, NH, his nephew Matthew Farrell and his wife Jennifer and great nephews Jackson and Chase Farrell of Hooksett, NH. His step-daughter Kim and her husband Art Goulette of Southampton, MA, step-granddaughter Devon Brown of Boston, MA, and step-grandsons Jeff, Tim, and Mike Goulette of Chicopee, MA. The Memorial Mass will be on Saturday, January 28, at St. Patrick’s Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley, MA at 11am. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30-11am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Jack’s memory to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke, 70 Nick Cosmos Way, Holyoke, MA, 01040.
